Mizuya tansu were the central storage piece of the traditional Japanese kitchen — designed to hold dishes, tea utensils, dry goods, and prepared foods. This example showcases the refined craftsmanship and thoughtful joinery that distinguish the finest tansu of the period.

The two-part construction features four small upper drawers with original hand-forged brass medallion pulls; a pair of sliding doors with carved openwork panels and original chicken-wire mesh — designed to allow ventilation for stored foods while keeping insects out; a row of four small spice/utensil drawers with hand-forged iron pulls; and two large sliding lower doors with horizontal slatted detailing for primary storage. All hardware appears to be original.

The wood retains a warm honey patina with beautiful grain visible across all panels. The decorative carved silhouettes in the central openwork section are a particularly elegant detail — the kind of considered, quiet craftsmanship that defines great Japanese antique furniture.

This is a substantial, statement-making piece that works beautifully in a wide range of interiors — from a serene Japandi-inspired kitchen or dining room, to a wabi-sabi loft, to a more eclectic California-cool or Belgian-modern space.
