This is a portrait of Henry Edward Dreier (1872-1955) as a young boy. He is holding a stuffed toy horse … more This is a portrait of Henry Edward Dreier (1872-1955) as a young boy. He is holding a stuffed toy horse in his arms. Oil on canvas. The painting itself measures 17 1/2" x 15" and is displayed in an antique gilt wood frame measuring 20 1/4" x 18 1/4". Signed L. Blume lower right. I also have portraits of Henry Edward's mother, Dorothea, and his father, J. C. Theodor Dreier, which I am selling separately.

Condition: Heavily varnished and scattered in-painting. The canvas is a little loose on the stretcher, so you might consider having it restretched. There is an abrasion to the top left of the painting where the canvas meets the frame. The canvas fits slightly small in the frame, providing a small opening on one side. the frame shows some light losses to the gesso and to the paint around the edges of the frame.

I couldn't find much on Henry Edward Dreier. He was born in Brooklyn, NY and is perhaps known most notably as the son of Johann Caspar Theodor Dreier, a successful American businessman, who emigrated from Bremen Germany in 1849 and became partner of the English iron firm of Naylor, Benson and Company's New York branch. Theodor married his cousin, Dorothea Dreier in 1864, also from Germany. Their ancestors were civic leaders and merchants and Theodor and his wife, Dorothea, became civic leaders in their own right. They had one son, Henry Edward Dreier, and three daughters, including Katherine Sophie Dreier and Dorothea Adelheid Dreier, both of whom became notable artists in their day.
