Medium: Oil on board, circa 1930. Signed by artist in lower right. A.1840 About the Artist
Karl Plath (1886-1970) was an internationally known Chicago artist and ornithologist whose life-like paintings of birds were frequently exhibited in the Chicago area, including at Chicago’s Art Institute and the Field Museum, from the 1920s through the 1960s. His paintings also made at least one national tour in the 1930s and have been shown internationally. Almost all of his drawings were taken from life—at his home aviary where he collected hundreds of birds, at Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo, where he was the zoo’s first curator of birds from 1935 until his retirement in 1960, or in his global travels seeking rare and exotic specimens for the zoo.
"International Reputation"
The art reviewer for the Chicago Daily Tribune, Eleanor Jewett wrote on April 30, 1932: “Mr. Plath has succeeded in mastering the exquisite craftsmanship... these are not illustrations he puts before you, these are decorative paintings, beautifully balanced, gorgeously colored. They are whimsical, independent, gay or sober as the different characters of his subjects make them.” She adds: "A consuming love of birds since boyhood has been the inspiration for much of the joy of Karl Plath's life, and his writings and scientific illustrations have earned for him an international reputation." On March 25, 1945, Jewett, reporting on an exhibit at the Chicago Galleries Association, wrote: “Karl Plath... practically tops the show with his fine study of three exotic birds.”
Recent Auction History
Although well known during his lifetime, Karl Plath and his works gradually faded from the public eye after his death. His work reemerged in 2007 when one of his 1930s-era his paintings sold at auction for $7,000, not including 20% buyer’s premium, at The Chicago Art Auction’s live and on-line auction. The painting, "Florida Pelicans in Winter" is oil on canvas measuring 24" x 30."
(See /item/3760431 for auction results.) That was the first public sale of his work since well before his death. Additional paintings or watercolors have sold at auction since, including:
Maroon-Fronted Parrot, 20x16", oil on board, $1,600

(/item/4553861 )
Black-Necked Stilts, 25.25x29.25", oil on board, $800
(/item/4553860 )
A commercial artist early in his career, Plath was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts and also studied at the Art Institute and with Frederic Grant and John Stacey. In addition to his membership in numerous local and national art organizations, Plath was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, London, in 1962.
