It bears a label to the reverse of stretcher, 'Paoletti and Ferretti, Painters, Copies and Original Pictures, Via dei Fossi No 15'. Ferretti e Paoletti was a commercial art gallery recorded as being in operation at this address in 1880, see ‘Indicatore generale della città di Firenze amministrativo, commerciale, artistico, industriale e stradale’ (Tip. Galletti e Cocci, Florence, 1880 p.105. ) The painting is a traditional depiction of the "Madonna and Child," a theme widely represented in Christian art, especially during the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
