"Arco Della Chiesa Nuova," an original oil on canvas by Brian Shure, is a piece for the true collector. Shure is known for his realistic depictions of the world around us, including works that invite the viewer to experience cities up close. His unique style of realism produces an exquisite work of art that blends color and shadow in a complex scene that is extraordinarily executed. This masterful artwork is perfect for those who have an affinity for Europe, Italy, architecture, contemporary paintings, cityscapes, landscapes, and context-rich works.
Brian Shure is a painter and printmaker working with representations of people in public spaces. Originally from a small rural town outside Cleveland, he first learned about art from his parents' books, featuring the collections of the Louvre and the Metropolitan Museum. Drawing from nature became a life-long fascination, and as a teenager he began taking weekend classes at the Cleveland Art Institute. He received a BA from Antioch College in 1974, apprenticed with Ernest De Soto at Collectors Press in San Francisco, and worked as a professional lithographer for more than two decades.
Shure recalls meeting Wayne Thiebaud after a lecture and seeing the work of Jasper Johns for the first time AS inspirational for him as a young person, but also learned by working with the many artists and craftspeople from all over the world who were part of his life as a printmaker and teacher. Over the years, many artists have become both mentors and friends, as he has worked on printing projects with Francesco Clemente, Gregory Gillespie, and John Cage.
With his wife, art historian Evelyn Lincoln, he has published and printed editions under their imprint, Smalltree Press. Shure was a Master Printer and Coordinator of the China Woodblock Program at Crown Point Press from 1987 to 1994. His etchings of Ise-Jingu were printed in 2000 when he was a resident artist at Tokugenji Press in Nara, Japan.
In 2004, he completed a group of murals for the Pittsburgh Federal Courthouse. In the winter of 2013, he created a suite of prints while in Residence at David Krut Projects at Arts on Main, in Johannesburg, South Africa, and in the summer of 2015, he researched the woodblock process and completed a print project at Rongbaozhai in Beijing. He has taught as a visiting artist at Brown and Cornell Universities, has given workshops in the U.S., Japan, and Mexico, and taught in the Printmaking Department at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1996-2016.
He began working at the artist workshop, Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles in late 2016. As of 2018, he is working as a master printer and director of a new print shop, Anderson Ranch Editions at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colorado.
Brian Shure is a member of the advisory board of Highpoint Press in Minneapolis, and the author of two books on chine collé: Magical Secrets about Chine Collé, and Chine Collé, A Printer’s Handbook.
