Jacques PREVERT (1900 - 1977) The Faustian Theatre at St. John Lateran Rare original collage on unsigned paper. Shows traces of mounting on the back. Good condition. Dimensions: 43 x 32 cm Posthumous authentication dated January 28, 1987 by Janine Prévert, widow of Jacques Prévert, on the back of the collage. A surrealist composition in which the anticlerical poet gives free rein to his imagination to give his ironic vision of the clergy, where a parterre of bishops prostrates itself before the devil in the Basilica of Saint John of the Atran, the church of the Bishop of Rome. Jacques Prévert experienced religious education. He retained a holy horror of the divine comedy of dogmas and "isms." In his collages, the cult servants are grotesque, depicted with "pince-nez over their hearts." Jacques Prévert built his reputation as a visual artist around his splendid surrealist collages, tinged with poetry, which have been the subject of several exhibitions, notably at the Maeght Foundation in Saint Paul de Vence. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
