PREFACE
The history of Philadelphia is marked by an extraordinary succession of benefactors who have enriched or assisted the life of the community in a variety of ways. One of the most remarkable of these figures was Jules Mastbaum.
In the fiftieth year of a highly productive life, he suddenly discovered the excitement of the great French sculptor Auguste Rodin; his enthusiasm was such that in less than three years he had with a characteristic energy acquired close to two hundred works with the intention of creating a public collection to enrich the lives of the people of Philadelphia.
That he should not have lived to enjoy the fruition of his dream and the fame his achievement has brought his city is a sad irony. However, the collection has had a significant impact upon the steadily increasing admiration for Rodin that has developed in the United States since the Second World War. Celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the opening of the Museum with the publication of a new Handbook should encourage a wider appreciation of the qualities that so moved Mr. Mastbaum.
