Each plate shows the species in pairs or family groups, carefully illustrated to capture distinctive markings and natural behaviors. The series includes the following: 1. Common goldeneye (bucephala clangula) and greater scaup (aythya marila), standing at the water’s edge with finely detailed plumage. 2. Garganey (spatula querquedula), a pair in reeds and shallow water. 3. Spectacled eider (somateria spectabilis), a female with ducklings along a rocky shoreline. 4. Teal (anas crecca), a pair with young chicks near a stream bank. The plates are signed in the stone by the artist (variously “reiss” and “jk”), both of whom contributed to late 19th-century ornithological publications. Produced using chromolithography, these prints exhibit the rich coloring and delicate shading that gave the technique its popularity for natural history subjects. They combine scientific precision with decorative artistry, making them appealing both as zoological records and as wall art. We sell and ship this set unframed. Such sets are valued by collectors of ornithological prints and natural history illustration. The tranquil scenes of ducks with their broods make this series especially suited for display in country homes, libraries, or spaces with a focus on nature and wildlife. Condition report: good condition overall. Colors remain vibrant and well-preserved. Margins show minor age toning and occasional faint handling marks. Plate marks are visible around the images. No tears or significant blemishes. Framing tips: for a unified display, frame the four plates in matching dark oak or walnut frames with ivory mats, emphasizing the earthy palette of the birds and backgrounds. A softer gold frame with a cream mat would lend a more decorative and traditional look. Technique: chromolithograph maker: reiss & j.k. (artists/engravers), c.1890, europe See less
