It features the male and female stag beetle (Lucanus cervus, Figs. 1 and 2), their eggs in decomposing oak (a), a 4-year-old larva (b), and a nymph stage (c). Also included are the rhinoceros beetles Megasoma actaeon (Scarabaeus actaeon, Figs. 3 and 4) and the European rhinoceros beetle Oryctes nasicornis (Figs. 5 and 6). This engraving is a part of Bertuch's renowned 12-volume children's encyclopedia, published from 1790-1830, which featured 1,200 beautifully engraved plates on diverse topics such as natural history, science, and mythology.
