Untitled Garden Scene, an original oil on canvas by Corinne Hartley, is a piece for the true collector. The viewer is invited to step into the painting to explore the scene within and imagine gazing at an easel of a plein-air painter with the greenery and flowers in full view. Here, Hartley chose to depict a garden scene full of plant life, with two cats almost hidden in plain sight. This painting showcases Hartley's keen ability to capture emotion, nature, and life - all in a brushstroke. Both her technical talent and choice of subject matter pair perfectly with its carved, custom, gilt frame. This masterful work would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for landscapes, garden scenes, impressionism, romanticism, realism, plein-air painting, and nature.
Corinne Hartley, a prolific American artist, became well known for her life-like portraits, works that have been distributed around the world. Graduating from the Chouinard Art Institute in 1944, Hartley began her career in commercial art as a fashion illustrator. For thirty years, she made her living with her drawing skills, and in off hours, honed her talent as a painter. As photography inched its way into fashion advertising, she made the transition by exhibiting her work in local galleries. Immensely popular with the public, her life-like portraits were widely coveted.
Over the years, Hartley felt equally at home working in several mediums – charcoal pencil, watercolor, and oil. Then, in the 1990s, she began exploring sculpture as well, energetically making it a capstone to a career that spanned more than sixty years.
In an art world that thrives on diversity, and a public with eclectic tastes, Hartley was determined to stay within her genre. Her works are about humanness, the kind of undeniable realism that art can express, even over photography. There’s a certain innocence portrayed in these works, making obvious her belief in the core values of human love, compassion, and joy.
Hartley’s works have been exhibited across the country, garnering many awards, including Best of Show at Clymer Museum. Collectors of her works include such notables as Reggie Jackson, Barbara Mandrell, and Tony Bennett.
Surrounded by family and friends, Corinne Hartley passed away on August 28, 2020 at age 96.
