"Bull Elk (Wapiti)," an original oil on canvas by David Bungay, is a piece for the true collector. Bungay is known for his landscape paintings, most notably works depicting the wilderness. His unique figurative style blends his use of color and subject matter to produce a uniquely simple scene with complex execution. This is a rare opportunity to acquire an early 1980's Bungay wilderness work for which he is best known. This original painting is paired perfectly with a custom wood frame, bridging both the materials and wildlife represented in the painting. Bungay custom painted hoof prints onto the frame, a rare addition rarely found with works of art. This masterful artwork would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for nature, contemporary paintings, and figurative works or art.
This work, "Bull Elk (Wapiti)," was part of Bungay's "North Woods" group of paintings and watercolors exhibited at Janus Gallery in Los Angeles in 1984. The Great North Woods, also known as the Northern Forest, are spread across four northeastern U.S. states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York.
David Bungay, an American painter, is best known for his oil and canvas landscapes, including depictions of the wilderness and wildlife.
Bungay was born in Glendale, California in 1933. He obtained his master’s degree in art from UCLA in 1961 and continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany. Coming back to the states, he immersed himself in the art scene. It was during this time he married famed abstract artist, Lynn Bungay. Together, they had a daughter, Sophia. Truly a family of artists, Sophia’s godfather was family friend Jim Morrison of The Doors, and her great-uncle was Zorro actor John Carroll.
Bungay quickly became well-known for his landscapes, which remain an integral part of the Southern California art scene to this day. They have sold to large corporations such as Union Oil and to celebrities such as Steve Martin. One of his more famous works would become the Venus DeMilo, which was featured in the movie ‘Speed.’
A January 13, 1984 Los Angeles Times article described Bungay as an artist who is “often as accurate about nature as Andrew Wyeth – and without his fussiness. In an image of a deer running away there is a hint of Winslow Homer…The works, in fact, waft with urban art-school memories. They are occasionally witty as in paint-splatter rendering of granite, or eccentric as when Bungay uses a piece of plastic for a ram’s eye. Mainly they are melancholy. Somehow these pictures bespeak a gifted figurative artist who has philosophically walked away from art world politics and shifts in fashion. Here is a special kind of wistful middle-aged disillusionment content with quiet personal satisfaction.”
Bungay has exhibited in numerous galleries throughout his illustrious career, including the Craig Krull Gallery, Arena 1 Gallery, Ucross Foundation Art Gallery, and the Katherine Cone Gallery, to name a few. He has exhibited both in solitaire as well as with groups of artists, including Don Bachardy, Simone Gad, Ed Moses, Laddie John Dill, Mauro Caputo, Derek Boshier, Jim Morphesis, and James Strombotne.
