The illustration presents both an adult female (left) and a juvenile (right), highlighting the species’ distinctive features, particularly the coarse mane-like bristles and elongated snout that give the animal its name. Native to Borneo, Sumatra, and surrounding islands, the bearded pig is one of the most unusual members of the wild pig family and has long fascinated naturalists for its distinctive appearance and adaptation to tropical forests. The plate originates from a 19th-century zoological series directed by Hermann Schlegel (1804–1884), a German naturalist and later director of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden. Schlegel was a leading figure in zoological studies of his time, especially in the classification of mammals and birds. His illustrated works, often produced with highly skilled lithographers, were celebrated for their precision and detail, combining scientific accuracy with artistic beauty. This print is an excellent example of the artistry and scientific value of early natural history illustration. It not only documents the species with remarkable accuracy but also reflects the 19th-century fascination with exotic fauna discovered during colonial expeditions. Today, the Bornean bearded pig holds conservation importance as its natural habitats face pressure from deforestation and hunting, adding further value and historical context to the image. Condition: Very good. Clean sheet with strong impression and fine original colouring. Slight toning to the margins and occasional minor handling marks, typical for age, not affecting the image. Plate mark visible. Framing tips: A dark green or walnut frame with a cream or light ivory mat would enhance the natural tones of the animals. For a more dramatic presentation, a gilt frame with a wide mount can highlight the 19th-century character of the print.
