Discover a vase that witnessed the intersection of two worlds: that of ancestral Japan during the late Edo period (1830-1850) and its Arita or pre-Imari porcelain, and that of the West, the romantic Europe of the time, in its exponential quest to import Asian porcelain and Japonism.
Its baluster shape is magnified by a majestic decoration of kiln-blue lotus flowers on a background of red and gold scrolls, enhanced by a turquoise-blue neck and completed by a gilt-bronze mount and draconic-looking handles, demonstrating a richness of decoration and Japanese craftsmanship from the Late Edo period (1830-1850), employing motifs and decorations with Japanese-European influences, thus enhancing the beauty of Japanese Arita porcelain.
This addition of bronze may have come from European craftsmanship; indeed, the Japanese excelled more in the art of porcelain. Once the orders were processed, these vases left the port of Nagasaki for shipment to European ports in Holland or France, where the bronze could have been crafted to meet the European demands of the time. The attribution to Hichozan Shinpo porcelain, a house that created refined porcelain for the West, is confirmed by the signature located under the vase's porcelain base, hidden by its bronze support.
Fans of mid-19th-century Japanese porcelain or Asian art, don't wait any longer and treat yourself to this rare vase with its rich decoration, in excellent overall condition.
