“Still Life,” Castilian School, Peñalba Font, 1967 – Spain
Oil on canvas depicting a magnificent still life. Executed during the 20th century, following Baroque models. Signed and dated in the lower right corner “Peñalba Font, 1967.”
It displays the characteristic style of its genre: realistic and meticulous, which gradually gained importance in art history. The great artist Caravaggio (1573–1610) was one of the first artists to depict still lifes with the conception of a pictorial work, but many others used it at some point in their careers. Originating in antiquity and very popular in Western art since the 17th century, still lifes give the artist more compositional freedom than other pictorial genres such as landscapes or portraits. Before 1700, they often contained religious and allegorical symbolism related to the objects they represented. Also known as still lifes, they often feature animals, flowers, fruits, foods, plants, and more. Their development is part of a growing appreciation for painting and an explosion of interest in naturalism and the imitation of nature that began to develop at the end of the previous century.
The work, as is common in its genre, stands out for its sobriety of composition. The background is neutral, ochre-toned, and the various elements are arranged on a dark wood surface. The work features a dark green glass bottle, a clay jug, two white eggs, a cloth, and a gilded brass utensil.
