This is a bronze mirror called “Makkyo” in Japanese.
Most likely made in the mid-to-late 1800's, this type of mirror … more This is a bronze mirror called “Makkyo” in Japanese.
Most likely made in the mid-to-late 1800's, this type of mirror was commonly used prior to the production of glass mirrors.
It has acquired a lovely verdigris patina finish.

On the one side, this mirror features a finely-detailed bronze casting in relief with three cranes and a total of three pine trees,
along with Japanese symbols and a moulded signature mark at the left-hand side.

In Japan, the crane and the pine tree both symbolize good fortune and longevity. Prominently featured are a pair of cranes next to a pair of small pine trees -- cranes are also a symbol of marital fidelity and a pair of pine trees symbolize marital harmony.

To create a reflective surface, the maker gilted the opposite side of the mirror with tin, which was highly polished to reflect the image of the person using the mirror. This one has maintained a good deal of its reflective surface (notice reflections in the photo)

The dimesions are: 11-3/4" tall (including handle) x 8-1/8" diameter -- the handle is 3-5/8" tall 1-1/2" wide and still has its bamboo-wrapping.
