moreSay it with flowers! Here's a set of three vintage/antique hardcover illustrated flower books to page through, at your leisure, or to use in planning and planting and a vintage flower garden and then displaying the blooms. The oldest of the books is 'The Wild Flowers of California' (1909) by Mary Elizabeth Parsons, illustrated by Margaret Warriner Buck. A few of the nostalgic black-and-white drawings have been hand-colored, by a previous owner, in this 417-page book, adding to its charm and poignancy. 'Flower Arrangements in Color' by Rockwell Grayson is a hardcover, illustrated with striking color photos of early MidCentury floral arrangements, for decor accents or for centerpieces.
This 238-page book includes the theory of color, color in flower arrangements and the "trends" of the 1940s. Author Grayson appears to have been an expert writer on flowers. 'Favorite Flowers in Color' by E.L.D. Seymour includes 300 gorgeous color plates of many species and varieties of flowers. This book includes its original "Useful Identification Guide" with a transparent grid to place over the flower photos to identify species by common name and by botanical Latin names, and more. This book is 633 pages. The books are in fair-good vintage condition, with their covers showing more wear than the interiors. The oldest 'California Wild Flowers' book has a few age spots, but the illustrations and text are bright and unmarked. The book's spine is worn, as shown. The 'Flower Arrangements' book has some mild wear to the cover edges, but a clean, unmarked interior.
'Favorite Flowers' book is clean, bright and solid, inside and out. The cover has some light wear, as shown. Former owner's name on the first free end paper.
I can see these books having a special place in your sunroom or study. They have been reprinted and are for sale at many times this price. The reprints in no way compare to the loveliness and design of these old books.
