Hardcover book in pink embossed linen, printed dust jacket published by Harry N. Abrams Inc. Publishers New York, printed in Japan in 1987. It features a monograph survey of the artworks of the artist Alex Katz, with accompanied compelling text by author Ann Beattie.
Alex Katz ( B. 1927 ) is an American Modernist artist of a Jewish background born in Brooklyn New York. Katz is one of the most recognized and widely exhibited artists of his generation. Often associated with The Pop Art Movement, he began exhibiting his work in 1954, and since that time has produced a celebrated body of work with expressive power that includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints.
His earliest work took inspiration from various aspects of Mid-Century American culture and society, and over the past five decades he has established himself as a preeminent painter of Modern Life. The distinctive poetic portraits and lyrical landscapes bear a flattened surface and economy of line. he uses characteristically wide brushstrokes, large swathes of color, and refined compositions creating a new and distinctive type of Realism in American Art that evokes a cool but seductive emotional response.
Since the 1950's Alex Katz's work has been the subject of more than 200 solo exhibitions and nearly 500 group exhibitions around the world. Artworks by Katz can be found in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
In this special volume novelist Ann Beattie steps out of the world of fiction and into the world of art as she examines the work of the artist Alex Katz. This book reveals his artworks in a provocative and original new light. Centered around her selection of 26 paintings, many from the 1980's that had never been reproduced before this book, Beattie draws an engaging personalized portrait of the artist and his work.
The author interviewed not only the artist but some of the subjects of his paintings.
