Encased in elegantly-grained mahogany, this chest exhibits all the features typical of Central Virginia work in the early 1800s. Neat and plain style? Check. Simple ring on a tapered foot? Check. Mixture of yellow pine and poplar secondary wood? Check. It also helps that the previous owner's parents acquired this piece in the Shenandoah Valley when they were young. Additionally, the inlaid diamond escutcheons and well-executed mahogany veneer point to an urban area of manufacture.
