moreThis sharp and sophisticated c. 60s Asian themed buffet (or for some could be utilized as a bar, a dresser or even a 'media center' with your flat screen fitting on top OR, with some modifications to the inside, behind the double doors, a screen can fit 'inside' nicely, keeping all media out of sight unless you're actually in 'media mode'.
The TEAK WOOD makes this a quality piece—opening the drawers and examining it's 'bones' one can easily see it's handcrafted and built to last. But in spite of its SOLID and SOUND framework it's design is exquisite—the bronze hardware—on point—and the distinctive Asian design gives it an exotic sophistication without integrating some of the more overt aspects of Asian design like 'black lacquer, mother of pearl' or overly ornate embellishments.
Based on this criteria and other pieces acquired from this auction—I've seen similar pieces in France where more some furnishings are designed with a more simple and less 'heavy-handed' aesthetic.
When 'investing' in quality furnishings—I have a short-list questions I like to ask myself before I decide if it's 'adoption-worthy' :).
Q: Is the piece a one-spot wonder? (I try to buy 'investment' furniture I can use for a lifetime. While I may have a specific 'need' for a piece I have my eye on—I look at it from more than one perspective to determine whether it can be integrated into my lifestyle in the future.) A: No! This is a wildly versatile piece. At home in the dining room—formal or informal. At home in the living room—a liquor bar, storage for cocktail parties and entertaining.
Q: Is its design TIMELESS? A: It's understated design is simple but sophisticated and the elegance in detailing like the hardware gives it potential to easily 'mingle' with potential high-end antiques or purchases down the road.
Q: Does the piece play well with others? A: Indeed! While my collection is eclectic—it's important they all sing the same tune. In this case—the tune is CHIC! Whether it's primitive pieces—well-worn—short on sheen but high in personality OR if I've splurged on a purchase which adds GLAM to my repertoire—this buffet/dresser has many miles of potential design smiles. There is really no room (maybe the mud room would be a stretch)...but from FRONT and CENTER to bedrooms, a large bath or spa room, to even a child's room—since I've always tried to decorate my kids' rooms with pieces they might want to take with them to college!). This piece has INCREDIBLY FRIENDSHIP potential. less
