moreThis Jean Michel Basquait very rare first edition vintage 1992 iconic Whitney Museum of American Art exhibition collector's hardcover art book is an incredibly special and unique book to add to your library collection. It was published by Harry N. Abrams New York and The Whitney Museum of American Art, printed in Hong Kong in 1992 to accompany the iconic retrospective exhibition at the museum, just after the artist's untimely death in 1988.
jean Michel Basquiat ( 1960 - 1988 ) was born to 2 Haitian immigrants in Brooklyn New York in 1960. His early creative career was as the street graffiti artist nick named " Samo " in the late 1970's on New York City's Lower East Side. By the early 1980's with the help of his friend Andy Warhol, Basquiat began to make his emotionally charged aesthetically arresting Neo Expressionist paintings. In 1992 The Whitney Museum of Art held a retrospective exhibition of the life works of this great American Contemporary artist and master of social commentary.
His work focused on suggestive dichotomies such as wealth vs poverty, integration vs segregation, and inner vs outer experience of the human condition. He appropriated poetry, drawing, painting, and married text and image with abstraction and figuration. Basquiat's works had strong social commentary and deeper truths about the individual and the power structures of racism, and criticism of colonialism and support for class struggles.
The very rare out of print hardcover first edition 1992 collector's art book measures 9 3/4" W X 12 1/4" H X 1" D, with 271 pages. The hardcover book with dust jacket features yellow cloth fabric covered boards and gold leaf tone embossed cover and spine titles. this landmark volume features 273 illustrations, including 160 plates in full color.
It is in excellent " like new " condition with very light signs of handling. There is very light minor faint soft ripples on the lower page margin area of the last 6 pages in the index section at the back of the book. Otherwise the book is in excellent clean " like new " condition. It is now being offered here for an excellent price. less
