moreLa Nuit, etching and aquatint printed in colors on BFK Rives, 1960, signed, numbered 4/50 and dated in pencil, printed by Hayter and Atelier 17.
This work in an abstract composition by Stanley William Hayter (English, 1901-1988). Hayter is consider one of the most significant printmakers of the 20th Century. He also founded Atelier 17, a workshop where artists could gather to make prints. Through this he built an important community of printmakers that included Picasso, Giacometti, Pollock and Rothko, among many others.
Hayter's primary contribution to the field of printmaking was printing with color. Prior to his developments printing with color was considered to be a very difficult process as the artist needed to create a separate plate for each color to be included in the composition. Hayter, however, developed a way to layer colors on a single plate making the process much easier and quicker.
This particular work is from a later period in his career when he had abandoned the burin and the black line that is ever present in printmaking, and focused on completely color. The bright green interacts with and jump out from the navy blue background. The lines move dynamically throughout the composition giving the work a painterly quality.
