moreThis listing is for one original engraving of Francois Boucher's engraving, published in Paris in 1856 by A. Quantin. Francois Boucher (29 September 1703 – 30 May 1770) was a Rococo painter who took after French artist Antoine Watteau and Flemish Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens. Despite using his wife and children as models, his work typically deals in mythological, allegorical, and romantic subject matter. Madame de Pompadour (chief mistress to Louis XV!) was his patron and commissioned several portraits from him.
This scene features three Roman gods: Venus, Vulcan, and Aeneas, also known as Aphrodite, Hephaestus, and Aeneas (respectively) in Grecian mythology. In this image, Venus is asking her husband Vulcan to provide their son Aeneas with a weapon and armory before the latter leaves for war. Sword is handed to the young man as cherubs and doves fly around them. The composition is done in a typically Baroque style: darkened margins and swirling, circular movement around the center of the image serve to brighten the middle area where the artist means to focus viewers' attention. The effect is quite dramatic and interesting! Beautiful, detailed, and ever so French, this piece will look exquisite when framed, perfect for a bedroom or boudoir. Vive la France! less
