What is the Average Sofa Size?

With all the different styles, most sofas still fall under the same sizing categories. Standard size sofas with three seats are generally around 6-8 feet long and 32-40 inches deep. Loveseats with two seats are generally 4-6 feet long and 28-30 inches deep.

Specific measurements will be your best friend when you’re looking for a new sofa. As you plan out your space, it can be helpful to draw a complete floor plan with all your existing furniture so you know exactly how much room you have left for a sofa. You want your sofa to fill the room, but not overwhelm the space. Pay attention to things like back height in relation to ceiling height, and the number of cushions available for the amount of people you’d like to accommodate (no one likes being the middle person stuck between two cushions…). In order to avoid a Friends situation à la Ross (remember when his sofa broke in two as the crew tried to pivot it around the stairwell?), make sure you measure not only where the couch will end up, but also the spaces it’ll have to go through to get there (doors, stairs, elevators), so you don’t realize that you have too tiny of an entrance until it’s too late!
