What is an Eastern King?

An Eastern King bed is another name for a standard king size bed, measuring 76” wide by 80” long. It is the widest bed available on the market, measuring 4” wider than a California king bed. An Eastern king bed derives its name from the California king bed. When the California king— measuring 72” wide and 84” long—was created in the mid 20th century, many mattress makers pointed out that extra width would be more beneficial than extra length. To bring that vision to life, Europeans rolled out a 76” wide by 80” long bed and coined it the “Eastern king” to differentiate it from its West Coast cousin. Worth noting is that while the Eastern king is the same as a “standard king,” it is different from the “super king.” Also created in Europe, the super king is a popular size in England, measuring 72” wide by 78” long inches.
