How is a Sculpture Different from a Statue?

A sculpture is a three-dimensional piece of art shaped from a material like marble, bronze, or glass. A statue is actually a subset of a sculpture, or a type of sculpture. Whereas a sculpture can be abstract or non-representational, a statue is virtually always a representation of a recognizable figure like a human or animal. While not universal, sculptures also tend to be associated with the outdoors and are most frequently found in garden or landscape settings.
