With a storied decades-long history, Hinson is known for iconic wallpaper and fabric patterns that are beloved by designers and those in the know. As a point of reference, if you’ve ever seen a banana leaf pattern on a wall, a pillow, or even a phone case these days… you’re looking at the legacy of Hinson. In the early 1940s, Lucile and Remy Chatain Sr. asked Albert Stockdale to create the iconic banana leaf motif, and this piece of design history has remained in vogue ever since.
Other Hinson patterns became staples of the design industry over the years, and are now available on Chairish. The Spatter pattern was created by Harry Hinson in the early 1970s, with layers of screen-printed dots resembling spots of paint tossed about in an abstract way. Called “an American icon” by House Beautiful, it’s now available as a fabric and wallpaper in a blend of colors designed to catch the eye.
Now a part of the House of Scalamandré — the company purchased the Hinson brand in 2020 — these patterns are seeing renewed light and exposure. They’ve long been admired and sought after by the design community, but the larger audience that Hinson is receiving now is sure to keep the brand popular for many years to come.
