Cathy’s Travel Collection Idea Is Genius!

We’re back with a new guest tastemaker for some quick-fire questions and a mini-curation of some fab Chairish finds!

This week we are joined by interior designer, Cathy Austin. Now based in Charlotte, NC, Cathy’s design career began with a foray into a different wing of the decorative arts: as an archivist for Sotheby’s in N.Y.C. Besides arming her with top notch knowledge of fine art and literal hands-on experience with the finest pieces in the world, her auction house days also compelled Cathy to pursue her degree in interior design. Today her namesake firm, Catherine M. Austin Interior Design, is delivering delightful interiors that bring renewed style and soul to traditional design. With her fine art expertise, Cathy has also developed a specialty in working with art collectors to create stunning interiors designed around their treasures. Talk about the best of both worlds!

We were recently able to steal a few minutes with Cathy and chat all things art and design.  Read on to see her Chairish picks and what art this Sotheby’s-trained expert collects for herself!

Coolest vintage piece in your house?
On a trip to Marrakech, I found a painting by Morocco’s first modernist painter Mohammed Melehi from the 1990s. It turns out he also studied in the U.S. and his work is in the MoMA’s permanent collection.

Ultimate style icon?
Marella Agnelli

Do you collect anything?
I advise clients that your home should tell the story of your life. I collect watercolors from all the places I have travelled that cover the walls of my living room. It is like being surrounded by a travel journal filled with fond memories.

What would be the title of your autobiography?
I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead!
