Wicker

Wicker outdoor sofa styles run the gamut. From ornate Victorian sofas with Peacock chair stylings to modular modern sofas, there’s a wicker sofa to suit almost every taste. That said, wicker sofas will generally provide a casual, low-key romantic feel to virtually any yard. Look for upright settee styles for smaller spaces and modular sectionals for larger patios and poolsides. Newly-made pieces will offer you the option to go with natural or synthetic wicker, while most vintage and antique pieces will require that you go au natural.

Iron

Iron sofas are perfect for outdoor nooks and walkways. Use them in places where you want to create a place to perch for a cup of coffee or a moment of contemplation, but not necessarily a full-on lounge session — as you might suspect, iron sofas can be a bit stiff. While cushions can add comfort, these pieces are best reserved for areas where you’re not expecting to spend hours on end. Designs by makers like Brown Jordan and other similar manufacturers might be the exception to the rule. These makers created more ergonomic-minded styles outfitted with exceptionally plush cushions.

Rattan & Bamboo

For a coastal aesthetic, nothing fits the bill quite like a rattan or bamboo outdoor sofa. Bamboo and rattan sofas are similar to wicker sofas, in that they’re made of natural materials, but they generally showcase a looser weft. The result is an outdoor sofa that feels most befitting for a coastal or Palm Beach Regency-inspired yard. These playful sofas are also excellent vehicles for colorful cushions. Opt for coral or light blue cushions for a Regency-inspired space, or awning-striped cushions for a more classic resort feel.
