Lacquered in transparent cinnabar-red, this square-back guanmaoyi, or official's hat chair, dates from the end of the Qing dynasty and … more Lacquered in transparent cinnabar-red, this square-back guanmaoyi, or official's hat chair, dates from the end of the Qing dynasty and was designed for the elite populace in Southern China; guanmaoyi in northern China have protruding top rails, which resemble formal Ming headgear, hence the general term "official's hat chair". Chairs of both kinds were utilized at dining tables, desks, and other areas of houses of the well-to-do. The S-shape back splat, carved with a medallion that depicts a stylized brazier in full flame, is echoed in the sinuous sloping arms and the gooseneck arm posts. George N. Kates, an American scholar who lived in Beijing in the 1930s, praised square-back chairs such as this example in his pioneering book "Chinese Household Furniture" (1948). "The whole plane of the upper part of the back is bent slightly backward, and the arms, too, are gently curved to accommodate the human figure," Kates wrote. "When a number of such refinements are united, the result is a civilized piece of furniture, the general effect is only emphasized by the use of highly polished hardwood, with just enough irregularity of the grain showing through the finish to add interest.” less
